Community members in the Kanawha Valley are highlighting the technical specifications and local history of the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, an aircraft frequently recognized by residents for its distinctive profile and engine sound.
According to accounts provided to WKNA 49, the Bell 505—often referred to by enthusiasts as a "whirlybird" or "chopper"—has long been a subject of interest for local aviation hobbyists. The aircraft is a five-passenger light helicopter known for its classic lines and reliable airframe. While some newer models are in circulation, several residents noted that well-maintained examples of the 505 remain a favorite sight in the skies over southern West Virginia.
Local resident Whitley Hearse-Curtis recently documented one such aircraft, describing it as being in excellent condition.
