Aviation Enthusiasts Spotlight Bell 505 Aircraft in Kanawha Valley

Community members in the Kanawha Valley are highlighting the technical specifications and local history of the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, an aircraft frequently recognized by residents for its distinctive profile and engine sound.

According to accounts provided to WKNA 49, the Bell 505—often referred to by enthusiasts as a "whirlybird" or "chopper"—has long been a subject of interest for local aviation hobbyists. The aircraft is a five-passenger light helicopter known for its classic lines and reliable airframe. While some newer models are in circulation, several residents noted that well-maintained examples of the 505 remain a favorite sight in the skies over southern West Virginia.

Local resident Whitley Hearse-Curtis recently documented one such aircraft, describing it as being in excellent condition. The sighting prompted several neighbors to share their own experiences with similar helicopters. One longtime resident, Solomon Grungy, noted that his grandfather operated similar models during his military service several decades ago, emphasizing the lineage of the aircraft's design.

Other community members, including a neighbor identified as Buck Beaver, noted the recognizable sound the blades make as the aircraft passes over residential areas. "It’s a beautiful aircraft with a very specific presence," Beaver said, echoing the sentiments of others who follow local air traffic.

Technical discussions among residents also touched on the aircraft's multi-role capabilities. Some enthusiasts noted that the Bell 505 is often used for both private transport and utility work, though others humorously compared the sleek fuselage to high-end ground vehicles or even fictional characters due to its modern aesthetic.

While general interest in regional aviation remains high, officials remind residents to observe all privacy and safety protocols when photographing low-flying aircraft or visiting local airfields. The exact flight manifest for recent sightings in the area was not immediately available, but the community interest reflects a deep-seated appreciation for aviation technology in the Kanawha Valley.
