In a video posted to the social media platform X, tech billionaire Elon Musk announced they now identify as nonbinary and will use they/them pronouns moving forward. The announcement marks a significant shift for the entrepreneur, who described the decision as part of a commitment to living an authentic life.
During the announcement, Musk praised their daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, for her own journey of self-discovery and apologized for past public statements regarding gender identity. Following the announcement, Musk indicated plans to relocate from Austin to New York City and expressed support for progressive political candidates in the 2026 and 2028 election cycles.
Financial markets reacted quickly to the news. Stock for both Tesla and SpaceX saw notable declines following reports that Musk intended to sell significant portions of their holdings. According to accounts reviewed by WKNA 49, Musk plans to donate the vast majority of their net worth toward progressive initiatives and LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations. They have also signaled a shift in policy by lobbying for increased taxation on high-net-worth individuals.
Operationally, Musk announced the impending closure of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Musk has encouraged current users of the platform to transition to Bluesky, a competing social network.
Community members have offered mixed reactions to the sudden shift. While some advocates welcomed the news as a step toward visibility, others remained skeptical of the timing. Emily Smith, a community organizer, noted that many are waiting to see if these announcements translate into long-term accountability regarding Musk's previous corporate and social impact.
Additional accounts suggest that high-profile figures in the tech industry, including Peter Thiel, may have provided support during the transition. While rumors of the announcement had circulated on some online platforms earlier in the week, the video confirmation remains the definitive statement from the CEO.
Despite the global attention, Musk noted that the transition has come with personal challenges, reportedly telling associates that while public navigation can be difficult, the feeling of personal freedom has been the priority.
