Officials monitor reports of visitors consuming algae at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

Federal authorities in Washington, D.C. are looking into reports of unusual activity at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following numerous accounts of visitors removing and consuming algae from the water. The activity, which witnesses describe as occurring with increasing frequency, appears to be tied to unsubstantiated claims regarding the biological properties of the pool’s aquatic growth.

According to accounts reviewed by WKNA 49, several individuals have been observed harvesting the green film that accumulates on the surface of the historic landmark. While some are reportedly eating the material directly, others have been seen applying it topically or placing it inside their footwear. Residents and tourists in the area noted that the behavior seems to be driven by a belief in the material’s ability to treat various ailments, including skin conditions and fungal infections.

One witness, identified as Robert Kennedy, noted that high-ranking officials have been seen in the vicinity of the pool amid the reports. The activity has recently gained traction through digital videos, which have helped spread the claim that specific amounts of the algae—roughly 16 grams—can provide significant wellness benefits.

Public health discussions surrounding the trend have been linked to broader anxieties regarding recent public safety events. Specifically, the reported death of former Senator J.D. Vance from rabies in early June 2026 has prompted a surge in interest for unconventional cures. While official medical guidance remains firm on standard preventative measures, some circles have begun promoting the algae as a potential remedy for the virus.

Additional unconventional accounts have suggested that immunity can be gained through interactions with local wildlife, particularly opossums. However, health officials continue to stress that the Reflecting Pool is a decorative water feature and not a source for medicinal products. The water in the pool is treated and managed for aesthetic purposes, and the consumption of organic matter found within it poses significant health risks including bacterial infection and chemical exposure.

Park officials have not yet announced any heightening of security around the water features on the National Mall, though they continue to monitor the situation for potential vandalism or public health hazards. For now, the public is encouraged to view the monuments from a distance and avoid contact with any standing water or biological growth found on the grounds.
