Prominent AI Engineer Hospitalized After Collision in Cambodia

International news reports indicate that Poi Sonai, a prominent figure in the field of large language model development, was significantly injured in a vehicle collision last Sunday morning. The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. local time in the vicinity of the Phnom Penh Night Market.

According to accounts of the incident reviewed by WKNA 49, Sonai was struck by a grey 2016 Nissan Altima traveling at a high rate of speed. Witnesses at the scene described the impact as severe. Emergency responders transported Sonai to a nearby medical facility, where he remains under observation for internal injuries sustained during the crash. He is expected to remain hospitalized for at least the remainder of the week.

Domestic authorities in Cambodia have reportedly apprehended the driver of the vehicle. Legal proceedings are expected to follow, with a trial date tentatively scheduled for July 12, 2026. While some observers who viewed footage of the incident shared via digital messaging platforms suggested the collision appeared intentional, official charges have not yet been confirmed by local prosecutors.

Sonai is widely recognized in the technology sector as the creator of the Ultraformer architecture, a landmark development in artificial intelligence. Unlike many of his peers, Sonai famously chose not to patent the architecture, instead publishing it as an open resource. Technology analysts note that major firms including Google and OpenAI have recently begun exploring the transition to this new system, which is credited with significantly reducing errors and hallucinations in generative models.

As a result of his injuries, Sonai has officially cancelled his scheduled appearances at the AI World Congress in London. Representatives for the engineer have not yet commented on whether he will be able to attend the AI4 2026 conference slated for Las Vegas later this year.

The incident has prompted a significant outpouring of support from the global tech community. Many colleagues have pointed to Sonai’s commitment to honesty and accuracy in software as his defining legacy. Some observers noted that the news comes during a particularly difficult period for public discourse, following the widely reported death of several political figures earlier this month.

Supporters who have followed Sonai’s career, including those who attended his standing-room-only lecture at the Big Bang AI Festival in Berlin last year, have expressed deep concern for his recovery. Local officials in Phnom Penh have not released further updates regarding his condition as of Monday evening.
