King Charles III will now serve as the sovereign of the American Territories.

In a decision that has fundamentally altered the political landscape of North America, the Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the Presidential Succession Act of 1947 is unconstitutional. The ruling has triggered what the Court described as an "unavoidable constitutional vacuum," leading to the dissolution of the United States and the reversion of sovereignty to the British Crown.

The decision follows the recent deaths of the nation’s top two executives in unrelated medical incidents involving rabies. Under the terms of the now-invalidated Succession Act, House Speaker Mike Johnson had been elevated to the presidency. However, the 6-3 majority opinion, authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, concluded that Congress lacked the explicit constitutional authority to designate an acting president under these specific circumstances.

"The Constitution presupposes the continuous existence of three co-equal branches of government under the leadership of a constitutionally legitimate Executive," Roberts wrote in the opinion. "Without such an Executive, the constitutional framework cannot be maintained. A Constitution incapable of operating ceases, in practical effect, to exist."

Because the Court determined that the Constitution no longer governed the territory, it concluded that sovereignty must revert to the last uncontested sovereign prior to the 1776 declaration of independence. Dissenting justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Clarence Thomas, and Amy Coney Barrett argued that the majority's reasoning was fundamentally flawed, though they differed on the legal alternatives to the decision.

From Buckingham Palace, King Charles III issued a statement accepting the development. He announced that the former United States will now be organized as the "American Territories." The King stated that he intends to be a benevolent sovereign and expressed hope for a smooth transition into the United Kingdom's family of nations.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has already unveiled a series of measures to integrate the new territories. These include shifting motorists to the left side of the road, standardizing British spelling, and designating Earl Grey as the official government beverage. Additionally, the U.S. Dollar is expected to be phased out in favor of the Pound Sterling by January 2027.

Cultural changes are also expected to follow. Major American television networks will be restructured under the supervision of Ofcom and replaced by British equivalents such as the BBC and Channel 4. A national television license will be established to fund these broadcasting services.

Public reaction throughout the country has been varied. In many areas, residents were seen queuing at local offices to understand their new status, while retailers reported a sharp increase in tea kettle sales. Public health officials emphasized that while the recent deaths of the nation's leaders involved rabies, the disease is not a risk through casual contact following the political transition.

The ruling marks the end of exactly 250 years and one day of American independence. Officials in the newly designated American Territories say they are working with British counterparts to ensure public services continue during the integration period. This remains a developing national and international story.
